The Make A Child Smile Appeal

Children With AIDS Charity (CWAC) is currently being supported by young fundraiser Richard Barker; he’s created The Make A Child Smile Appeal. Richard wants to reduce the stigma that surrounds HIV. He also wants to make young people that have been infected and affected by HIV smile!

Richard worked with a well known celebrity in 2003. That experience taught him the value of signatures. Richard’s trying to collect lots of signed items, so that they can be sold at our special events. He’s also trying to acquire lots of other items, so that they can be given to the children.

In Richard’s own words:

“Please help me raise money for this extremely important organisation! We’re unable to cure HIV/AIDS; however we still want to stop the virus from spreading. We’d also like to reduce the amount of stigma that still surrounds this virus. Virtually all of those living with HIV/AIDS conceal their identities, because they don’t want to be verbally or physically abused. These children are incredibly courageous! I decided to support this charity, because I was inspired by their stories. I hope that you’ll decide to make a donation or offer us some other form of support!”

The money that’s raised at our events will be used by our Education Department, which is both educating young people and fighting the prejudice that surrounds HIV. Excess funds will be directed into the Hardship and Respite Breaks Project.

In 2004 Barvest Ltd donated £1611.52 to the appeal. Saatchi & Saatchi published our details on their website. We sold three items at the Celebrities Guild of Great Britain ‘Unsung Heroes’ Awards. Those sales raised over one thousand pounds for The Make A Child Smile Appeal. We also sold a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at an auction; the highest bidder paid three hundred pounds for that book! The bfi London IMAX Cinema donated fifty tickets for a special screening of The Polar Express. Warner Bros. sent us promotional material; those items were given to all of the children that attended the event. We also distributed gifts at a special Christmas party, which was held at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The Christmas presents were donated by Trevor Sorbie, Atari and United International Pictures.

Biblion sold part of our book collection on Friday 7th October 2005. That event raised thousands of pounds for our Education Department. We’ve received signed books from J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates and the Archbishop of Canterbury. We’re trying to attract new donors, because they’ll enable us to create lots of special events!

At the beginning of 2006 we sent new clothes to orphans living in India and Romania. All of those children have been infected or affected by HIV. In August Richard completed a Tandem Skydive at the North London Parachute Centre. His friends and family donated hundreds of pounds to The Make A Child Smile Appeal. We sold some items at Bloomsbury Auctions in September. We incorporated a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince into that event. Sales of signed Harry Potter books have raised over five thousand pounds for The Make A Child Smile Appeal. In December Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi purchased a signed vacuum cleaner from us. That item had been donated by Sir James Dyson. This was a good end to a very eventful year!

The last couple of years have been incredibly hectic! We've tried to help lots of children and their families. Thousands of small gifts have been sent to various locations around the globe! We're still trying to find homes for over three thousand sunglasses, which were donated by Paramount Pictures.

Thanks to the support of many kind individuals our fundraising total is now over ten thousand pounds. Richard wants to double that figure in 2008!

We've recently received a signed copy of the final Harry Potter book. We've also collected signed items from Matt Damon, Simon Cowell, Lewis Hamilton and Dame Elizabeth Taylor. We're very grateful to all the celebrities that have supported us over the years!

Richard launched MACSMP3.co.uk in 2008. He worked with 7digital to create this website. It's the first MP3 download site that donates 100% of its profits to charity! You can download a track and make a child smile! Richard believes that this is the future of fundraising.

Clothes4Kids raises money for The Make A Child Smile Appeal. Richard created this website and he designed the t-shirts. He'd like to work with well known designers in the future, so that he can create a new clothing range.

You may have seen iTeddy on Dragons' Den. This company produces an extremely innovative teddy bear! We'll be receiving their support throughout 2008.

The Children With AIDS Charity's Education Department is receiving the money, which has been raised by The Make A Child Smile Appeal. This money has enabled them to expand. We're holding workshops in British schools, which teach young people about sexual health. We aim to reduce the stigma that surrounds HIV. We also want to enable teenagers to make an informed choice about sex. We've received lots of positive feedback. We've also found that young people would rather talk to us than their teachers. We hope to work with many more schools in the future. Please don't hesitate to contact the charity if this is of interest to you.

Richard wants to help every child living in the UK with HIV. There are over four thousand young people who may need his support. A little bit of love can go a long way! He hopes that his hard work will enable every child to have a brighter future!

The Make A Child Smile Appeal has received a one thousand pound donation from The Carnegie Youth Trust. Peter de Savary is one of its trustees. These are his words:

“Such a worthy children's charity deserves support by the healthy and fortunate. It is for this reason that we were delighted to participate.”

You can support us by:
